Laser Dentistry in Tribeca, NYC
Laser dentistry uses focused light energy to treat gum disease, release tongue-ties, and perform precise soft-tissue work — with less cutting, less discomfort, and faster healing than traditional surgery. I'm Dr. Nina Izhaky. We were early adopters of dental lasers: our LANAP laser gum therapy runs on the PerioLase MVP-7 Nd:YAG laser, and we use laser technology for tongue-tie release and gentle gum treatments too. Here's what lasers actually do in dentistry — and when they're the right tool for your case.

What lasers do in dentistry
Not a gadget. A set of precise, tissue-sparing tools — each matched to the right case.
LANAP laser gum therapy.
LANAP stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure — a defined periodontal protocol using the PerioLase MVP-7 Nd:YAG laser with root-surface debridement, clot formation, and periodontal follow-up, designed for selected cases of moderate to advanced periodontitis.
No scalpel flap, no stitches.
Traditional gum surgery cuts tissue away and stitches it back. Our laser approach precisely removes diseased tissue and kills bacteria deep in the pockets without cutting away healthy gum — minimal stitches, generally less discomfort, faster healing.
Laser tongue-tie release.
For tongue-tie (frenectomy) cases, the laser releases the restrictive tissue precisely with minimal bleeding and quick recovery — a gentler path for a procedure that changes how the tongue moves.
Laser hygiene maintenance.
Our laser hygiene and ProphyJet maintenance program keeps treated gum disease from coming back. Periodontitis is a chronic condition — treated patients who stay on maintenance keep their results.
How laser treatment works here
The right laser, the right protocol, the right case.
Evaluation first.
We measure pocket depths, check bleeding and inflammation, and assess bone levels and bite forces. A full exam is required before recommending any laser treatment — LANAP is for selected cases, not everyone.
Your matched laser protocol.
LANAP for qualifying moderate-to-advanced periodontitis. Fotona TwinLight laser therapy for non-surgical gum treatment. Laser frenectomy for tongue-tie. The tool follows the diagnosis.
Comfortable treatment.
You're fully numb during treatment — most patients need only local anesthesia. Most report significantly less post-treatment soreness than they'd feared, and many return to normal routines within a day or two.
Follow-up and maintenance.
Periodontal follow-up is part of the protocol, and our maintenance program protects the result long-term. You'll get individualized aftercare instructions for your specific case.
“Dr. Sam did the FOX interview on the LANAP procedure — he was one of the first to start using it. The healing is phenomenal, the recovery minimal — similar to a regular filling rather than a full surgical recovery with stitches. We also add additional protocols that enhance the results and bone regeneration. It's really short of a magical wand!”
— Dr. Nina Izhaky (on Dr. Sam Morhaim)
My honest rule about dental lasers
Lasers are remarkable tools — but they're still tools, not magic. The result comes from the diagnosis, the protocol, and the hands running it. We use lasers where they genuinely outperform the scalpel, and we'll tell you plainly when they don't.

Laser dentistry questions, answered
01What is laser dentistry?
Dentistry performed with focused laser energy instead of — or alongside — traditional instruments. At our practice that means LANAP laser gum therapy with the PerioLase MVP-7 Nd:YAG laser, Fotona TwinLight non-surgical laser gum therapy, and laser tongue-tie release.
02Is laser gum treatment painful?
You're fully numb during treatment — most patients need only local anesthesia. Most report significantly less post-treatment soreness than they'd feared, and many return to normal routines within a day or two.
03How is laser gum surgery different from traditional gum surgery?
Traditional gum surgery cuts the gum tissue away and stitches it back, using a scalpel flap. Our laser approach uses the PerioLase MVP-7 to precisely remove diseased tissue and kill bacteria deep in the pockets without cutting away healthy gum — no traditional flap, minimal stitches.
04Who qualifies for LANAP?
LANAP may be considered for selected patients with moderate to advanced periodontitis — deep periodontal pockets, inflammation, periodontal bone loss, or compromised tooth support. A periodontal examination is required first; we measure, check, and assess before recommending anything.
05Can laser treatment save loose teeth?
In certain cases, controlling periodontal infection and supporting healing may improve the prognosis of compromised teeth. LANAP can't guarantee that every loose tooth can be saved — bone support, mobility, fractures, decay, and bite forces all affect prognosis. Your evaluation gives you an honest answer tooth by tooth.
06How much does laser dentistry cost?
It depends on the treatment and the extent of the condition. We'll give you an exact number at your evaluation and walk you through financing. We don't bill insurance directly — ask about our membership plan for patients without coverage.
