Kids' Cavity Prevention: What Actually Keeps Them Away

I'm Dr. Nina Izhaky. Cavities don't have to be part of childhood - but they do need a plan. Tooth decay is quiet: by the time something hurts, the problem is usually bigger and more expensive than it needed to be. Our prevention program for kids is simple and it works: gentle checkups and cleanings every six months, sealants for young molars, and drill-free treatment for the earliest spots. Prevention is the kindest - and most affordable - dentistry there is.

The prevention program, in four parts

No magic. Just a plan that catches everything early.

Six-month checkups.

Gentle, thorough exams every six months - explained in words your child understands before anything happens. We catch micro-lesions while they're still treatable without a drill.

Professional cleanings.

Regular cleanings keep plaque from hardening where brushing can't reach. Your child's hygienist visit is also when we review home habits and fine-tune them.

Dental sealants.

A smooth, clear protective coating brushed onto the deep grooves of molars to seal out plaque and food debris. Highly recommended for children and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars erupt.

Early-spot treatment.

For localized early enamel lesions - white spots before they become cavities - we use drill-free ICON resin infiltration. Small problems get small, painless fixes.

What a prevention visit looks like

Every visit follows the same rhythm: look, clean, protect, plan.

01

A gentle exam.

We check every tooth and the gums, and we screen how your child's jaw and airway are developing. Everything is explained in kid-friendly words first - no surprises.

02

A thorough cleaning.

Plaque comes off, teeth get polished, and your child leaves with that smooth-teeth feeling kids actually enjoy. Cleanings are also when we spot the earliest changes.

03

Protection where needed.

If permanent molars are in and the grooves are deep, we recommend sealants. If we see early white spots, drill-free ICON resin infiltration can stop them before they become cavities.

04

A plan that's genuinely theirs.

Some kids need nothing more than a six-month recall. Others benefit from a shorter recall cycle or targeted protection. Either way, you leave knowing exactly what comes next and why.

The sealant question every parent asks

Are sealants really worth it? For most kids, yes - and the timing matters. We recommend sealants for children and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars erupt, around ages 6 and 12, because those deep grooves are where cavities love to start. The coating is smooth, clear, and painless to apply, and it can last up to 9-10 years with routine care. Think of it as a raincoat for the molars - brushing handles the smooth surfaces, and sealants guard the places brushes can't quite reach.

The Honest Parenting Conversation

Prevention Is the Kindest Dentistry There Is

I tell parents this at almost every checkup: the best dental visit is the boring one. No drama, no drills, no surprises - just a clean bill of health and a kid who barely remembers being here. That's what prevention buys. And it's why I take the six-month rhythm so seriously: tooth decay doesn't announce itself. By the time a child complains about pain, a small fix has usually become a bigger one.

Here's what I want parents to understand about sealants and early treatment: they're not upsells, they're shortcuts. A sealant takes minutes, costs far less than a filling, and protects a molar for up to a decade. Drill-free ICON resin for an early white spot stops decay before it needs a real filling. We're not adding treatment - we're subtracting future treatment.

And if your family doesn't have dental insurance, don't let that be the reason a small problem becomes a big one. Our in-house membership keeps preventive care within reach at $70 a month - normally $100. Cost should never stand between a child and a cavity-free childhood.

Cavity prevention questions, answered

01How often should my child have checkups?

Every six months. Gentle, thorough exams and cleanings catch micro-lesions while they're still treatable without a drill - prevention is the kindest and most affordable dentistry there is.

02What are dental sealants?

A smooth, clear protective coating brushed onto the deep grooves of molars to seal out plaque and food debris. They're painless to apply and guard the places brushes can't quite reach.

03At what age should my child get sealants?

We highly recommend sealants for children and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars erupt - around ages 6 and 12. Deep grooves on new molars are where cavities love to start.

04How long do sealants last?

Up to 9-10 years with routine care. We check them at every six-month visit and can touch them up if needed.

05What is ICON resin infiltration?

A drill-free treatment for localized early enamel lesions - the white spots that appear before a real cavity forms. Micro-invasive resin stops decay early, without numbing or drilling.

06What if my child already has a cavity?

We treat it gently - the gentlest techniques available, explained in words your child understands first. For anxious children, sedation options are available, and we'll walk you through what's right for your child.

07We don't have dental insurance. Can we still do prevention?

Yes. Our in-house membership keeps preventive care within reach at $70 a month (normally $100). Cost should never be the reason a small problem becomes a big one.

08Do you offer financing?

Yes. Every child deserves care, and we'll walk you through financing options that work for your family. Call (212) 561-5303.
