If your gums bleed when you brush, don't wait. That's your mouth asking for help.

01 // FOUNDATIONAL PERIODONTAL HEALTH

Healthy gums are the foundation of a lifelong smile.

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the United States. Beginning as reversible gingivitis with inflammation and bleeding gums, untreated bacteria migrate deeper beneath the gumline to cause periodontitis and bone erosion. At Tribeca Dental Studio, our in-house periodontal specialists deliver targeted scaling, root planing, and laser therapy to arrest infection and protect systemic health.

The Practice Perspective

Know Where You Stand: The Stages of Gum Disease

Gum disease doesn't arrive all at once — it progresses in stages, and the stage determines the treatment. Gingivitis is the beginning: gums that bleed when you brush, mild swelling, persistent bad breath. At this point the infection is in the gum tissue only, and it's fully reversible with professional cleaning and better home care.

Left alone, gingivitis becomes early periodontitis. The infection moves below the gumline, pockets form between teeth and gums, and the earliest bone loss begins. This is where deep cleanings — scaling and root planing — come in. By moderate periodontitis, pockets deepen, bone loss is visible on X-rays, and teeth may start to feel loose. Treatment gets more involved: laser decontamination, targeted antibiotics, and in some cases surgical therapy.

Advanced periodontitis is the stage everyone wants to avoid: deep pockets, significant bone loss, teeth that shift or fall out. Even here, teeth can often be saved with the right treatment — but it's harder, longer, and more expensive than catching things early. The honest truth is that most of the advanced cases we see started as bleeding gums someone ignored for a few years. If your gums bleed, that's your signal. Don't wait for pain — gum disease rarely hurts until it's serious.

LANAP Laser Therapy

LANAP: The Laser Alternative to Gum Surgery

For decades, treating advanced gum disease meant flap surgery — cutting the gums open, cleaning the roots, stitching everything back together. LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) takes a different path. A specialized laser removes only the diseased tissue inside the pocket, sterilizes the area, and leaves healthy tissue untouched. There's no cutting and no stitches — and most patients are surprised by how unremarkable the recovery feels.

Our history with LANAP runs deep. Dr. Sam Morhaim was one of the first clinicians to adopt the procedure, and his work with laser gum therapy was featured in a FOX News interview. We pair the laser protocol with additional steps designed to support healing and encourage the bone to regenerate around the teeth. For the right patient, it's as close to a reset button for gum disease as dentistry has.

CLINICAL PATHWAY

Step-by-Step Periodontal Care

01

Comprehensive Screening

We measure pocket depths and capture digital X-rays to assess bone levels and locate hidden subgingival plaque.

02

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Planing)

Ultrasonic instruments gently remove hardened tartar from root surfaces and smooth rough areas to deter bacteria.

03

Laser Micro-Decontamination

Targeted laser energy sterilizes deep pockets, vaporizes bacteria, and stimulates biostimulative healing factors.

04

Ongoing Maintenance & Recovery

Targeted post-care rinses and scheduled periodontal maintenance keep bacteria below critical threshold limits.

“Dr. Sam did the FOX interview on the LANAP procedure — he was one of the first to start using it. The healing is phenomenal, the recovery minimal — similar to a regular filling rather than a full surgical recovery with stitches. We also add additional protocols that enhance the results and bone regeneration. It’s really short of a magical wand!”
