The short answer

Wisdom teeth don't always need to come out — but the teen years are the best time to take a look, before the roots fully form. If yours need to go, we can take all four out while you sleep under sedation. Most of our patients are surprised how smooth it goes: take your medication, follow the post-op instructions, and you likely won\u2019t need any time off.

From Dr. Izhaky

Before they become a problem

Wisdom teeth should be addressed before they become a problem. The teenage years are the best time — before they come in fully. The dentist should be able to say which ones will definitely become a problem in the future and address them before the problem arises.

It's a little more expensive, but it's worth it: the patient goes to sleep, gets all four removed, and they never become a problem.

We prefer to do the surgery before infection sets in and before discomfort begins. It should be a planned procedure to avoid any discomfort to the patient.

Why early

What happens if I don't remove my wisdom teeth?

Swollen gums

Wisdom teeth swell the gums, and biting on the swollen gum with the upper or lower teeth is very uncomfortable.

Infection

Left alone, the area becomes infected and the problem grows. Planned surgery keeps you from ever reaching that point.

Damage to other teeth

Sometimes wisdom teeth compromise the teeth in front, and that has to be addressed with a bone graft.

This is a real example: the wisdom tooth damaged the tooth in front of it. This should have been avoided by removing it sooner — now the tooth has the damage.

The procedure

Asleep, quick, and controlled

We have the ability to put you to sleep. When the patient is asleep, time is minimized — for the patient's comfort and the doctor's ability to do what needs to be done.

Everything happens in a very controlled environment: swelling is minimal and recovery is the fastest.

Less swelling comes down to individual healing ability — and to how efficiently the doctor works. Less time in surgery means less swelling.

Recovery

How long does recovery take after wisdom teeth removal?

1

Pain controlled with medication

Discomfort is controlled with medication. No time off necessary.

2

Day three is the peak

The third day is when swelling gets the worst — that's just how humans heal. After that, recovery is very fast.

3

If a bone graft is needed

When wisdom teeth compromise the front teeth, the bone graft makes recovery a little longer — but it's controlled with medication.

Most of our patients report minimal swelling and minimal discomfort — because they take their pain medication and follow the post-op instructions.

The Practice Perspective

Don't Wait Until They Hurt

Most parents ask us when they should bring their teens in for a wisdom tooth evaluation. Our answer is always the same: before they cause problems. Between ages 15 and 18, a panoramic X-ray shows us exactly how they're positioned, whether there's enough room, and which ones will become problems down the road. Treating them at this age — when roots aren't fully formed and bone is more flexible — means simpler surgery and noticeably faster recovery.

What we see too often are young adults arriving with acute pain, infection, or damage to neighboring molars — problems a timely evaluation would have prevented. An impacted wisdom tooth can push silently against the second molar for years, causing decay in an otherwise healthy tooth. By the time it hurts, treatment is more complex and recovery longer.

At Tribeca Dental Studio, a wisdom tooth evaluation is straightforward: an X-ray, an honest conversation about what we see, and a clear plan. If your kids are in their teens, now is the ideal time. And if you're an adult whose wisdom teeth were never evaluated, it's never too late to know where you stand.

Common questions

Wisdom teeth FAQs

When is the best time to get wisdom teeth out?

The teenage years are the best time — before they come in fully. At the evaluation, the dentist can tell which ones will definitely become a problem in the future and address them before the problem arises.

Will I be asleep for the surgery?

We have the ability to put you to sleep. When the patient is asleep, time is minimized — for the patient's comfort and the doctor's ability to do what needs to be done.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery is minimal, depending on the severity of the case. The third day is when swelling peaks — that's just how humans heal — and after that, recovery is very fast. Pain is controlled with medication and no time off is necessary. Most of our patients report minimal swelling and minimal discomfort because they take their pain medication and follow the post-op instructions.

What if my wisdom teeth are damaging the teeth in front?

Sometimes wisdom teeth present in a way that compromises the teeth in front, and we address that with a bone graft. That recovers a little longer, but it's controlled with medication.

Do you take all four out at once?

Yes — the patient goes to sleep, gets all four removed, and they never become a problem. It's a little more expensive, but it's worth it.

Do you try to save teeth?

We try to save every tooth, because we know people with teeth live longer. If the patient has a full set of teeth, the wisdom teeth are not our priority to save.
