Teens Heal Fastest — Here's Why Timing Matters
Parents ask me all the time when to bring their teenager in for a wisdom-teeth check — usually while their kid is mid-growth-spurt and barely sitting still in my chair. My answer is always the same: mid to late teens, around sixteen to nineteen. That's the window when the roots are still forming, which means an easier surgery and a faster recovery. It's the single most useful timing fact in oral surgery, and waiting past it only makes things harder.
The second thing I tell every family: not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. I see plenty of twenty-somethings whose wisdom teeth came in straight, clean well, and aren't bothering anything — and I send them home with instructions to keep flossing, not a surgery date. When I recommend removal, I'll show you your own 3D images and point to exactly why: the angle, the crowding, the infection risk. If I can't show you a reason, there's no surgery.
And for the nervous ones — teenagers especially — you're fully numb before anything happens, and if you're anxious we talk through sedation options at the consultation, not in the chair.
